Mutual Gaze is a feminist photographic endeavour by Miriam Levi (IT) and Ylva Teigen Aas (NO).
Through analogue self-portraiture, they investigate how the act of making a photograph can become a shared space, instead of merely a tool for observation.
Originally developed as an inquiry on the violence within the language of photography, Mutual Gaze is a soft act of resistance.
The artists are concerned with how the photographic lexicon is inherently tied to weaponry and war, and how this affects the experience of photographing and being photographed. Can it be reframed?
For the first time, the duo presents a comprehensive collection of photographic prints selected out of their on-going collaboration that has spanned over the last three years between Italy and Norway. Over and over, they place themselves in different climates, claiming space and trusting the other, in a non-hierarchal photographic setting.
Ylva Teigen Aas (b.1992)
Educated with a BFA and MFA in Fine Arts from KMD (UiB), as well as the Fine Art Photography Program at Oslo Fotokunstskole and the Art History program at NTNU, Ylva now works as a freelance photographer and camera-based artist. Typically working with photographic series on walls and in book form, her work is characterised by contemplation, subtlety, and self-reflexivity, primarily through analogue processes. She is part of Fotoverkstedet, a darkroom collective located in Laksevåg.
Miriam Levi (b.1998) is an emotionally driven researcher, working between image and text. By blending fiction and personal experience, she explores the role of stories in the shaping of identity and memory. In books, videos, and photographic series, images accumulate meaning over time, and words grow out of photographs. She holds a BA in photography from Edinburgh Napier University, and an MFA in Fine Arts from KMD (UiB).
Both artists live and work in Bergen.
