12 CONNECTIONS
Last year Hannah McDonald and Johanna Sevholt invited five artists to join them in working collaboratively towards an exhibition. The intention was to nurture existing collaborative connections, and to start new ones. The invited artists are Susanna Antonsson, Dorota Dziong, Martin Holm, Rita Maria Muñoz Farias and Liliane Wang.
In their respective practices, Hannah and Johanna have each immersed themselves in the process of doing. By ‘doing’ they mean that they are working in communication with the unpredictable that comes with a material based practice, as in making a move and continuing according to the results.
With collaborative work one has to be open to working in a constant state of flux as one person adds or edits something outside of you. Whether this act is taking place in front of your eyes as you work on the same thing at the same time, over time as works get passed back and forth or through a call and response process.
The works in ‘12 connections’ have been made by different pairings or groups between the seven artists. Through the process of working collaboratively the group has experienced an opening up of frameworks, learnt how to work with new materials, looked at an idea or concept from a different perspective and been challenged to sit with unease and patience within a process.
This exhibition is a celebration of what collaboration can bring to an art practice.
