Popular Culture and humor are key concepts in Sigbjørn Bratlies work, which has a conceptual and analytical approach in parallel with a low-key fashion of dealing with serious subect matter. The artist as antihero is another starting point for understanding Bratlie works, something the show’s title points out: The Revenge of Trilok Gurtu refers, not as one might think, to an obscure American action movie, but to the Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu. The title outlines thus an unexpected landscape as a backdrop for the exhibition, a landscape that plays on the artist’s and the public’s expectations of art as something complex, responsible and profound, a project the artist and the audience does not always succeed in creating or deciphering. It is in this conscious play between expectations and actual results Bratlie humour is anchored.
